PORT HARCOURT (CONVERSEER) – The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has applauded the Rivers State Government for its continued support for the Scheme.

Nafiu made the commendation when he visited the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

He particularly thanked the State Government for its mobility support, the payment of monthly allowance to Corps members as well as its plan to overhaul facilities at the Orientation Camp.

The Director-General remarked that the good gestures of the State Government and residents had attracted more Corps members to serve in Rivers State, and went on to assure that NYSC would continue to contribute to the socio-economic advancement of the State.

He, however, appealed for the relocation of the NYSC State Secretariat to a more serene location within the State Capital.

Nafiu, who said he was in the State to visit the 2,586 Corps members of the 2025 Batch ‘C’ undergoing Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Nonwa-Gbam, disclosed that a total of 8,349 Corps members of Rivers State origin, made up of 3,374 males and 4,975 females, were serving in other States across the country.

He also disclosed that NYSC was projecting about 650,000 Corps members for mobilisation next year, adding that there was therefore the need for the State Government to build additional hostels to accommodate more Corps members.

Welcoming the Director-General, Governor Fubara said the State Government had upgraded the facilities at the Orientation Camp when his administration came on board.

He stated that the hospitable nature of Rivers people was endearing the State to Corps Members, adding that the Government would always put the necessary things in place for their comfort.

Fubara promised more support for the NYSC State Secretariat and a conducive environment for the South-South Area Office 2, also located in Port Harcourt.
