Nigeria beat Morocco to lift record 10th WAFCON

RABAT (CONVERSEER) – The Super Falcons of Nigeria have defeated the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco to lift their 10th Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The match, which was held at the Stade Olympique de Rabat in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday, was going in favour of the host when they scored twice in the first 24 minutes of the first half.

Ghizlane Chebbak put Morocco ahead in the 13th minute. They doubled their lead with a fine strike from Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute to take a commanding lead at halftime.

Nigeria came back from the break on the front foot, and the pressure paid off as they were awarded a penalty, which Esther Okoronkwo slotted in the 64th minute to pull one back.

The Super Falcons restored parity in the 71st minute when Folashade Ijamilusi scored to draw the game level.

Jennifer Echegini completed the comeback for Nigeria after scoring from her teammate’s free-kick to make the game 3-2 in the 88th minute.

The Falcons held their line despite 6 minutes of added time to clinch their 10th African Women’s title.

The player of the match and of the tournament went to Rashidat Ajibade, who was vital again for Nigeria.

Converseer reports that Nigeria has won the WAFCON a record 10 times, in 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024 (played in 2025).

The competition is held every two years.
